The municipal council of Sagunto has unanimously approved the awarding of the City Medal to Socoltie and the Unión Musical Porteña, in recognition of their social and cultural work.
The ordinary council meeting in August of the Sagunto Town Hall has unanimously approved the granting of the City Medal to two local entities: Socoltie, Coop. Valenciana, and the Unión Musical Porteña (UMP). The recognition highlights their service history to the municipality.
Socoltie receives the distinction for its work of over four decades in favour of the social and labour inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. The cooperative-based, non-profit entity began its activities in 1982 and was formally established in 1983.
Among its resources is an Occupational Centre operating since 1984, with a capacity for 45 people, and a Special Employment Centre created in 1986. In 2025, the Generalitat Valenciana declared it a public utility cooperative, a recognition that the Town Hall itself congratulated.
The Unión Musical Porteña, for its part, is distinguished for its contribution to the teaching and dissemination of music. Established in 2004 as a non-profit cultural association, it has consolidated a project that combines musical training with band, orchestral, choral, and modern music groups.
Its music school promotes generational change and the incorporation of students into the various groups. The entity has already won first prize and the audience award with its Youth Band at the III Memorial Francisco Fort Youth Bands Competition.
Both agreements include registration in the Municipal Register of Honours and Distinctions, publication in the Official Bulletin of the Province, and the active publicity actions provided for in the regulations. The formal presentation of the medals will preferably take place on 9th October, according to municipal regulations.
With this award, Sagunto publicly acknowledges the deep roots of both entities in the social and cultural life of the municipality. The Unión Musical Porteña also contributes to the preservation of the tradition of Valencian musical societies, declared intangible cultural heritage.
