The Local Police of Ontinyent has imposed over 70 fines on electric scooter users in the last three months for lack of insurance, documentation or vehicle manipulation. Additionally, more than 25 vehicles have been immobilised.
The Local Police of Ontinyent has changed its strategy regarding electric scooters: after an initial informative phase, it is now applying sanctions intensively. In the last three months, officers have issued more than 70 fines for infractions such as lack of mandatory insurance, absence of documentation or manipulation of vehicles.
The councillor for Citizen Security, Juan Pablo Úbeda, explained that the aim is not to “punish for the sake of punishing,” but to ensure that the new regulations are complied with and that scooters coexist safely with pedestrians and other means of transport. After initial months focused on raising awareness, it is now time to closely monitor violations that jeopardise safety.
The fines have focused on the absence of a certificate of characteristics, a circulation permit or registration in the national registry of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP). Cases of scooters with modifications that altered their original conditions and increased the risk of accidents have also been detected.
In addition to the fines, the Local Police has proceeded to immobilise more than 25 vehicles as part of these controls. Some have already been recovered by their owners after regularising their situation or meeting the required conditions.
The Ontinyent City Council reminds that the regulation of VMPs aims to organise their use and integrate them safely into urban mobility. Therefore, the Local Police will maintain controls, both informative and sanctioning, especially regarding road safety and vehicle documentation.
Scooter drivers in Ontinyent should keep in mind that insurance is mandatory and that the vehicle must be registered and unmodified. Those who do not meet these requirements are subject to fines and immobilisation of the scooter.
