The Valencia City Council reopens this Friday the section between Conca and Sant Vicent Màrtir. The complete redevelopment of the avenue, the largest in decades, will be ready for the return to school.
The Valencia City Council has reopened this Friday to traffic the section of the avenues Giorgeta and Pérez Galdós between the streets Conca and Sant Vicent Màrtir. This is the last partial step before the two kilometres of the road fully recover circulation next September, coinciding with the return to school.
The councillor for Urbanism and Housing and acting mayor, Juan Giner, has supervised this opening and confirmed that the comprehensive transformation of the avenue is entering its final stretch after fourteen months of works. The finishing touches, urban furniture, and tree planting will continue until the end of the year, but without affecting traffic.
We are transforming Giorgeta - Pérez Galdós into a greener avenue, with more shaded areas, more accessible and more pleasant for the neighbours, and we are doing this by coordinating the works with the gradual return of traffic to minimise inconvenience,” stated Juan Giner.
The redevelopment of Pérez Galdós and Giorgeta is the largest urban project carried out in Valencia in over three decades. It covers 97,000 square metres and 2.2 kilometres of road, from the promenade of Petxina to the street of Sant Vicent Màrtir, passing through the neighbourhoods of La Petxina, Arrancapins, Nou Moles, Patraix, and La Raïosa.
The municipal investment amounts to 24 million euros, co-financed with Next Generation European funds. The works, awarded to the UTE formed by Pavasal and Grupo Bertolín, are being carried out in phases since June 2025 to keep traffic open in sections without works. The execution period has been extended until 16 December 2026 due to reasons beyond the company's control, such as the inability to plant trees in summer or interference with works from external companies.
The new pavements, mostly completed in most sections, have widths ranging from 3 to 7 metres, compared to the previous less than 1.40 metres. In terms of mobility, a segregated and bidirectional bike lane, 15 bus stops, and 26 pedestrian crossings have been created, and the sewage system, traffic light network, and public lighting have been completely renewed, with 265 new lights.
The tree cover is expanded with three lines of vegetation and sustainable drainage systems. In total, there will be 640 trees and over 6,800 square metres of green areas with 60 different species, in addition to preserving around 90% of the existing palm trees in the median. Planting has been reserved for the final phase, following the recommendation of the Parks and Gardens Service not to plant in summer to avoid losses and thermal stress.
The roadway will be “safer and more sustainable” thanks to 54,000 square metres of sound-absorbing asphalt, a pavement that reduces traffic noise and CO₂ emissions by up to 20%. To support local commerce, the local government has launched a commerce voucher campaign endowed with 300,000 euros, with each voucher worth 50 euros (25 contributed by the beneficiary and 25 by the City Council).
Now that the works are nearing completion, I want to thank once again the patience of neighbours and traders for the inconveniences caused by a project of this magnitude. But soon they will be able to enjoy a much more pleasant and sustainable environment, with more space to walk and more areas to stay,” added Giner.
With the reopening of this section, drivers can now circulate again between Conca and Sant Vicent Màrtir. The entire road will reopen in September, when the school year begins, and the final touches will continue until the end of the year without affecting traffic.
