The Valencia City Council strengthens the comprehensive renovation works of Colón Street with a third team, which are progressing as planned and will conclude in early December.
The comprehensive renovation of Colón Street, one of the main commercial axes of Valencia, is nearing its final stages. The works, which began in June, are advancing according to schedule and are expected to be completed in early December, just in time for the Christmas campaign.
The Councillor for Urban Planning and Housing and acting mayor, Juan Giner, visited the works this Friday and confirmed that a third work team has been added in August, joining the two already working from opposite ends of the street. This reinforcement coincides with the execution of the section of the Els Pinazos square.
“The Colón works are progressing at a good pace and meeting deadlines. As planned, in August a third work team has been added to take advantage of the summer and tackle the section of the Els Pinazos square, with the aim of completing this major transformation of the centre by December,” Giner stated.
The project, carried out by Pavasal and integrated into the Valentia Plan, covers an area of 21,900 square metres with an investment of over 2 million euros. The project renews the pavement with 8,137.20 square metres of granite on the sidewalks and 12,000 square metres of sound-absorbing asphalt, which will reduce noise and emissions.
The works focus on the sidewalks, which are six metres wide, divided into two longitudinal halves to progress from the facades towards the roadway without cutting traffic, aside from occasional disruptions while working on the curbs. The percentage of renewed sidewalk has already reached 55%.
The execution plan prioritises ensuring access to the shops on Colón at all times. Additionally, urban furniture is being renewed with the installation of 60 benches and chairs and 90 bins, which will eliminate the existing disparity of styles, and improvements in accessibility, signage, and specific traffic lights for bicycles are being incorporated throughout the street.
The intervention also extends to the Els Pinazos square and Cerdà de Tallada street, next to the Palace of Justice, to achieve a more cohesive and accessible environment in the city centre.
Colón Street is the first project to apply the Valentia Plan, the municipal project with which the City Council aims to unify the image of the centre and give it its own urban identity, based on a catalogue of aesthetic criteria defined by the Urban Planning Advisory Council.
