Sagunto's council unanimously approves urging the Ministry to review the study of the Sagunto-Teruel section and to consider a high-performance electrified double track.
The ordinary council meeting in August of Sagunto City Council unanimously approved a motion from the Popular Party to request the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to review the Informative Study of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor for the Sagunto-Teruel section. The agreement, defended by councillor Sara Cañada, includes amendments from Iniciativa Porteña, Compromís per Sagunt, and EU-Unides Podem.
The corporation requests that the analysis includes alternatives that ensure the future capacity of the corridor, adapting it to the anticipated industrial, logistical, and port growth. Among the requested options is the study of a high-performance electrified double track.
The approved text emphasizes that the current Informative Study is based on the present conditions of the infrastructure, but Sagunto "cannot afford for one of the main railway infrastructures of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor to be born already limited." The motion recalls that the corridor "accumulates a historical delay" due to decades of insufficient investment from successive governments.
The council also urges the municipal government to submit objections to the study, highlighting the development of Parc Sagunt, the establishment of PowerCo, the growth of the Port of Sagunto, and the strategic position of the city in the Mediterranean Corridor and the Trans-European Transport Network.
Furthermore, institutional support is given to the objections presented by the Generalitat Valenciana, the Business Confederation of the Valencian Community, the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), and other public or private entities. The Ministry is requested to convene a working group with ADIF, the Generalitat, the City Council, the APV, and the business community.
The council also requests that the design of the corridor prioritizes increasing the rail freight share, facilitating the transfer from road to rail and reducing emissions. It also demands that compatibility between freight and passenger transport is ensured, avoiding losses in capacity or quality of passenger service.
Finally, the Ministry and ADIF are called upon to provide a public execution timetable with budget, phases, and specific deadlines. It is also requested to consider the demographic increase and make the arrival of the commuter service to the Port of Sagunto possible.
The agreement comes during the public information period of the Informative Study, which the City Council considers an "opportunity" to convey a firm position in defence of the general interests of Sagunto. In 2017, the council already approved an institutional declaration demanding urgent investments in the Sagunto-Zaragoza line and the maintenance of existing infrastructures.
