The expansion works of the municipal cemetery of Tavernes de la Valldigna are nearing completion. The first phase, focused on the retaining walls, will soon conclude and will give way to the construction of two blocks with 48 niches.
The expansion works of the municipal cemetery of Tavernes de la Valldigna are progressing as planned. The first phase, which consists of the construction of the retaining walls of the embankment on the hillside of the site, is already in its final stages and will allow for the preparation of the ground on which the new expansion will be built.
Once these works are completed, the construction of 48 new niches, distributed in two blocks, is expected to begin next month, which will increase the cemetery's capacity and meet the current and future needs of the population.
This week, the mayor, Lara Romero, and the Councillor for Public Services, José Enrique Cuñat, visited the cemetery to check the status of the works and to see first-hand the progress of the project.
The project has been designed to go upwards because the current urban planning of the municipality prevents the cemetery from being expanded horizontally. According to the Town Hall, this is the only viable alternative to continue increasing capacity without occupying more land area.
The first phase of the project has a budget of 225,030 euros, while the construction of the 48 niches will require a municipal investment of around 80,000 euros. The works began last April and are expected to be completed before the end of the year.
This is a very necessary project and we have made a significant budgetary effort to respond to the current and future needs of the municipal cemetery. Therefore, we are investing 225,030 euros in the construction of the retaining walls, which will stabilize the ground and prepare new platforms, and we will allocate around 80,000 euros more to the construction of two new blocks with 48 niches,” said Lara Romero.
The mayor added that urban planning greatly limits growth possibilities and that, in the absence of alternatives, they must make the most efficient use of the available space.
Our responsibility is to anticipate, seek solutions, and plan ahead so that Tavernes has the necessary capacity at the cemetery guaranteed for the coming years,” affirmed Romero.
For his part, the Councillor for Public Services, José Enrique Cuñat, explained that there is constant monitoring of the works to ensure that the deadlines are met. The first phase will be completed shortly, and the construction of the 48 niches will begin next month, with the aim of having the entire project finished before the end of the year.
The residents of Tavernes de la Valldigna will thus see the capacity of the municipal cemetery expanded, a basic infrastructure that required intervention to ensure available spaces in the coming years.
