Sueca to Build a Memorial Pantheon in the Cemetery's Mass Grave

The Sueca Town Hall will build a memorial pantheon in the space that occupied the mass grave of the municipal cemetery to dignify the memory of the victims of the Civil War.

The Sueca Town Hall has announced the construction of a memorial pantheon in the space that until now occupied the mass grave of the municipal cemetery. The aim is to dignify the memory of those executed and persecuted during the Civil War and to provide them with a proper burial.

Work will begin shortly and the design has been agreed upon with the families of the victims. The Councillor for Democratic Memory, Sergi Tomàs, has stated that the pantheon “will represent a place of justice and dignity, a space for reparations tailored to the memory that the executed and their families deserve.”

For his part, the Mayor of Sueca, Julián Sáez, has emphasised the institutional commitment to democratic memory. “From day one, the current municipal government has fought hard to settle a historical debt of our town with the persecuted and their families. Thanks to the collaboration between the Valencia Provincial Council and the Town Hall, we will achieve a dignified rest for those who suffered repression and will provide their descendants with a place to remember them solemnly.”

Tomàs and Sáez have explained that the new pantheon will have the capacity to accommodate the remains of the 54 victims of Francoism who were murdered between May and July 1939 and exhumed from the mass grave in Sueca to undergo anthropological and genetic identification studies in Madrid.

Event for the Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris

The municipal cemetery of Sueca will host the commemorative event for the 82nd anniversary of the liberation of Paris next Saturday, August 22, where the role of anti-fascist fighters and their struggle for freedom in Europe will be particularly remembered.

Organised by the Coordinating Association for Memory, the event, held every summer, pays tribute to the victims of the Civil War and to the 22 Valencian soldiers of ‘La Nueve’, the legendary Spanish company that contributed to the expulsion of the Nazis from the French capital.
