Sagunto's council unanimously approved urging operators to collaborate on a coverage map and to carry out urgent improvements along the waterfront of Puerto de Sagunto.
The Sagunto City Council has unanimously approved a motion to demand telecommunications operators collaborate in the creation of an updated mobile coverage map for the municipality and to urgently carry out the necessary actions to ensure adequate service throughout the city, especially along the waterfront of Puerto de Sagunto.
The initiative, presented by Compromís per Sagunt and defended by its spokesperson, Maria Josep Picó, was supported by all municipal political groups during the ordinary session in August. The agreement also urges the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Generalitat Valenciana to promote the necessary improvements.
According to the motion, connectivity has become a basic infrastructure comparable to water or lighting, and its deficit affects quality of life, social cohesion, and economic development. In Puerto de Sagunto, where hundreds of families reside and intense activity increases in summer, residents suffer from differences in coverage that hinder communication, teleworking, electronic payments, or even emergency communications.
The text emphasizes that this situation limits the development of smart city policies, such as environmental sensors, real-time information, or smart mobility. Therefore, the council also agreed to incorporate a connectivity improvement plan within the strategy for smart city, digital transformation, and sustainability of the municipality.
The proposal argues that territorial equality involves fighting against the digital divide:
All citizens, regardless of the neighbourhood they live in, must be able to access digital services, job opportunities, and public resources on equal terms.
The agreements will be forwarded to the competent administrations and to the operators providing service in Sagunto. The improvement of coverage thus becomes a community demand with unanimous political support, which is now in the hands of the companies and the involved administrations.
