Valencia City Council completes this week the repair works on the iconic Calatrava bridge, which had not undergone significant intervention since its inauguration in 2008. The night works, which started in May, included repainting the pylon and inspecting the stays.
Valencia City Council announces the completion of the scheduled repair and maintenance works on the Pont de l'Assut de l'Or, the cable-stayed bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava that crosses the Túria Gardens next to the City of Arts and Sciences. The project, which began in May with a 110-day execution period, aimed to enhance the safety of the structure and extend its lifespan.
The intervention was necessary after a municipal inspection conducted in 2025 detected corrosion issues, cracks, and soft spots at various points of the infrastructure. The bridge, inaugurated on December 11, 2008, had not undergone significant repairs for many years, as noted by the Councillor for Urban Planning and Housing, Juan Giner.
The works have been carried out at night, with traffic closures between 10:00 PM and 6:30 AM, to maintain normal circulation during the day. The company Pavasal was responsible for executing the works, which included repairing cracks, treating corrosion, and replacing containment elements.
The complexity of the structure required the combination of various means for working at height. For the repainting of the pylon, elevating platforms of up to 80 meters were used, along with a team of climbers who worked up to an altitude of 125 meters. Specialized personnel inspected the main and retaining cables on the stays and repainted both the stays and their covers and protective elements.
In the abutments, moisture and water ingress in the anchorage struts were eliminated, concrete surfaces were cleaned, and the support devices of the south abutment were inspected. Access covers and frames to the seismic stops were also replaced.
The project was completed with the repair and replacement of the rescue devices of the pylon's fall protection system, following inspection and certification, and with the review of the deck drainage, which included cleaning the rainwater collectors and repairing corrosion points inside the metal box of the central rib.
Additionally, the City Council has renewed the bridge's lighting to comply with the regulations of the State Agency for Air Safety (AESA), as the infrastructure exceeds 100 meters in height. The lights are distributed at four levels: at 31.80, 63.60, 95.40, and 127.20 meters.
With this action, the council aims to ensure that one of the city's most emblematic infrastructures remains safe and durable. Residents and visitors crossing the bridge daily can now do so normally, as the night closures have been lifted upon completion of the works.
