The brigades from the SEPE summer employment plan are clearing 16,688 m² at eight bridges on the Palancia River in Sagunto. A preventive action ahead of the autumn torrential rains.
Sagunto City Council has launched a cleaning and clearing campaign for the Palancia Riverbed as it flows through the municipality, aiming to restore its natural capacity and prevent hydrological risks. The work focuses on eight bridges and covers an estimated area of 16,688 square meters.
The tasks, carried out by the rural maintenance brigades of the summer employment plan, are funded with €447,097 from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE). The intervention is limited to conservation work, with no structural changes or alterations to the river's appearance.
The mayor, Darío Moreno, and the councillor for Agriculture, Ana María Quesada, have supervised the progress of the work at the Cronista Santiago Bru i Vidal bridge, the Cronista Emili Llueca bridge, and the San José neighbourhood bridge in Puerto de Sagunto. At these locations, selective clearing of obstructive vegetation, such as brambles and dense growth species, is being carried out, and invasive or damaged tree specimens are being removed.
Additionally, waste and obstructive elements from the riverbed are being eliminated. All resulting material is immediately removed to prevent it from becoming an obstacle or fuel in case of fire.
Prevention Against Torrential Rains
Moreno emphasized that keeping the riverbed clean and the bridge openings clear is essential to prevent risks: “When torrential rains arrive, accumulated vegetation and obstacles are what cause the water not to flow properly, leading to flooding and other problems. That’s why we are acting now preventively, before autumn arrives.”
Quesada recalled that last winter, two bridges were cleared by a company, and this summer, with the SEPE teams, work is being done on the other six. “The task at the San José bridge is practically finished, and we are also continuing work on other bridges,” she detailed.
The councillor thanked the SEPE teams for their commitment to the city and their dedication, highlighting that this work complements the efforts made by the council last year on the first two bridges of the river as it flows through Sagunto.
The work will continue in the coming weeks until all eight bridges are completed, in order to prepare the riverbed before the arrival of the rains.
