Sagunto surpasses the halfway point of the Ecovidrio Green Flag campaign, which recognises recycling in the hospitality sector. A survey of 157 establishments reveals that 117 separate glass correctly.
The Green Flag for Sustainability campaign, driven by Ecovidrio, is entering its final weeks in Sagunto with a positive balance: 117 out of the 157 surveyed hospitality establishments separate glass correctly. This figure comes from a study conducted by the consulting firm Ecosilvo among businesses in the HORECA channel in the municipality.
The survey also shows that 120 establishments separate lightweight packaging well, 110 separate paper and cardboard, 119 the organic fraction, and 117 used cooking oil. The survey is part of the mechanics of this initiative, which aims to measure the real commitment of the hospitality sector to the circular economy.
Sagunto is competing with 27 other Valencian municipalities for this recognition. The coming weeks will be crucial for improving collection figures, as summer increases glass waste production in beach areas, where beach bars and restaurants are concentrated.
Last week, environmental educators from Mirada Circular (Imedes) raffled two mini-igloos for glass among those who visited their information tent on Almardà beach. This action aims to encourage citizen participation and bring recycling closer to residents and visitors.
The Green Flag Movement collected a total of 66,800 tonnes of glass packaging in 2025 across the 116 participating coastal towns. Thanks to this recycling, the emission of 38,700 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere was avoided, along with the extraction of 80,000 tonnes of raw materials, in addition to an energy saving of 47,700 MWh.
The Ecovidrio initiative responds to the seasonal increase in the consumption of glass packaging in the hospitality sector, which is highly concentrated on the coast during the summer. For the hospitality businesses in Sagunto, obtaining the Green Flag represents public recognition of their sustainable practices and added value for customers.
The results of the campaign will be known at the end of summer. In the meantime, establishments can continue to improve their separation habits, and customers contribute by placing each container in the green bin.
