The Valencian town of Ontinyent commemorates World Youth Day on August 12 with an astronomical observation of the total solar eclipse in Benarrai park, starting at 19:30.
Ontinyent joins in on Wednesday, August 12, for World Youth Day with an unusual event: watching the total solar eclipse from Benarrai park. The activity, organised by the Youth Department, will kick off at 19:30 and will feature the presence of professor and doctor in Materials Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Rosana Moriana, and the manager of the optics 'Óptima Salud visual y auditiva', Raquel Vela.
The Youth Councillor, Àlex Borrell, explained that this proposal continues the 'Estiu Jove' (Young Summer) programme, which has seen high participation among the town's youth during the summer months. According to Borrell, more than 450 young people participated in the Ontinyent Participa survey that helped design much of the programming, tailored to their demands and interests.
Among the most popular activities are the pool afternoons and nights at the Municipal Sports Centre, the Holi Party, and the Foam Party, which have filled the summer proposals with colour and fun. The councillor particularly valued the concert of young bands, an initiative that, as he noted,
the youth themselves are asking us to continue doing and to consider for future programming.
The Laser Tag day has also been very well received, to the extent that the department is considering repeating it. The positive response has also extended to outings outside Ontinyent: both the bus trip to Gandia for the San Juan night and the trip to Aqualandia filled all available spots.
The disco-mobile held in the Glorieta on Publication Day brought together a crowd of young people and has established this space as one of the meeting points of the summer programme.
With the eclipse as the main event, today aims to highlight a programme that, in Borrell's words,
is proving that when we listen to the youth and programme activities designed with and for them, the response is very positive.
After 'Estiu Jove', the Youth programme still has two special events planned within the Grand Week of the Ontinyent Festivals. On the night of the Alardos, the Glorieta will host the show 'S.O.S.' and on Saturday, August 22, also in the Glorieta, it will be the turn of Fercho Energy – The Full Show, a musical and entertainment proposal aimed at the young audience.
