The City Council of Catarroja will modify its tax ordinance to automatically apply discounts of up to 75% to electric and hybrid cars, without the need to request them, as long as the DGT provides the data.

The City Council of Catarroja is promoting a modification of its tax ordinance so that owners of electric and hybrid vehicles no longer have to expressly request the bonuses for the circulation tax. The new regulation will allow discounts to be applied directly, of up to 75% for electric vehicles and 50% for hybrids, provided the council has the data from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).

The mayor, Lorena Silvent, has defended the measure as a step towards a more agile administration: “The council already has the necessary information to recognise a bonus; it is logical that the administration itself carries out this management and does not force residents to initiate a procedure that we can avoid.”

The initiative, driven by the Finance department led by Juan Carlos Martínez Cuevas, stems from a proposal by the spokesperson for the Popular Group, Rafael Sanchis Muñoz. With this reform, the need to submit documentation is eliminated when the DGT allows verification of the requirements, although the traditional route remains for those not listed in the records.

The change continues the path initiated in 2017, when Catarroja introduced its first tax bonuses to promote sustainable mobility. Since then, and especially after the Dana storm, the local vehicle fleet has changed significantly: the municipality now has 20,766 vehicles, 826 more than at the beginning of 2024, of which 2,874 are hybrids and 424 electric, with increases close to 2,000% and 1,470%, respectively.

The modification also includes a 25% bonus for gas-powered vehicles, updates the treatment of historic vehicles to adapt it to current regulations, and simplifies the documentation required to prove this condition. It is also established as a requirement to access tax benefits that one is up to date with municipal tax obligations.

With this measure, the council aims to reduce the administrative burdens on taxpayers, decrease the number of applications and individual files, and prevent some residents from losing the discount due to ignorance of its existence or the procedure to request it. Tax management will be more efficient and green, according to the local government, which advocates for electronic administration and good governance.

For cases where Traffic does not provide all the data, interested parties can continue to request the bonus by submitting the corresponding documentation. The new ordinance will be processed in the coming months and is expected to come into effect in 2026, affecting the circulation tax for the next fiscal year.
