The Municipal Sports Foundation allocates over 775,000 euros to remodel three basic sports facilities in the districts of La Torre and Castellar-L’Oliveral, affected by the floods of 2024.
The Municipal Sports Foundation of Valencia has launched a package of works valued at over 775,000 euros to renovate several basic sports facilities (IDE) in the districts of La Torre and Castellar-L’Oliveral. The works, which are already underway, aim to recover public outdoor spaces that were severely damaged by the floods in autumn 2024.
The Councillor for Sports, Rocío Gil, has highlighted that this is a "historic investment" with which the municipal government aims to "recover and dignify the network of municipal outdoor spaces" in the Pobles del Sud. "We continue to update essential sports facilities for the daily lives of the residents of our districts," she noted.
Basic sports facilities are basic, freely accessible equipment that includes multipurpose courts, calisthenics areas, or ping-pong tables, allowing sports such as skating, basketball, handball, or futsal to be practiced at no cost.
La Torre: two reformed spaces
In La Torre, the investment amounts to 386,368.73 euros and will be executed within five months. The works focus on the expansion of the IDE La Torre D, located next to CEIP Padre Manjón, and the renovation of the IDE La Torre E, on Remigio Soler Tomás street.
In the first, the concrete slab will be repaired and levelled, a perimeter fence for the skating rink will be installed, and a new calisthenics and psychomotor area will be created. In the second, the current lighting poles will be removed, a metal structure with a roof will be built, the backboards will be replaced with regulatory ones, and LED lighting will be installed to achieve 300 lux.
Castellar-L’Oliveral: closures and access
In Castellar-L’Oliveral, the project has been awarded for 391,208.73 euros, also with a five-month timeframe. The works focus on the equipment on Doctor Aparisi street, where the indoor court, swimming pool, and outdoor area, which houses the basketball court, will be improved.
Additionally, two petanque courts will be built, the lighting of the entire facility will be improved, and it will be connected to the nearby public garden. The closure of the sports court will be done with concrete blocks and a translucent area to take advantage of natural light, and four access points with metal fences will be enabled to allow vehicle passage. The electrical panel will also be relocated to prevent acts of vandalism.
With these works, the Valencia City Council aims for the residents of these districts to recover spaces that are "essential for daily life" and that were severely deteriorated after the floods. The expectation is that the works will be completed within five months.
