The Valencian town has launched its major festivities with the Esmorzar de la Llàgrima and the Presentation of Positions, culminating in the proclamation by architect Ramón Esteve before hundreds of people in the main square.
Ontinyent kicked off this weekend the Grand Week of its Moors and Christians festivities with two of the most significant events on the festive calendar. On Sunday morning, after the mass in honour of the deceased festival participants at the Santa Anna hermitage, the traditional Esmorzar de la Llàgrima was held, gathering nearly 300 people.
During the event, the mayor of Ontinyent, Jorge Rodríguez, highlighted the role of women in the evolution of the festivities and advocated for a more inclusive language. He also called on the festival representatives to experience the festivities "with responsibility, prudence, and enthusiasm", reminding them that representing Ontinyent means representing the values of the entire city.
Later that evening, the main square hosted the Presentation of Positions 2026, which led to the proclamation by the Ontinyent architect and designer Ramón Esteve, introduced by his friend and partner Juan Antonio Ferrero. In a personal speech, Esteve championed the pride of his roots and defined Ontinyent as "a town with the essence of a village", where those who leave "always return".
The proclamation included an artistic proposal from the ballet Master, which accompanied the speech with a staging inspired by the construction and transformation of the city. The programme continues this Monday with the children's squad head competition at 23:00 in the main square.
On Tuesday, it will be the turn of the traditional Nit Gran in the Glorieta from 19:30, featuring the concert of "Rebellious Divas". At 21:00 there will be dinner on Músico Vert street, followed by dancing at 23:00, and the day will conclude with the grand open-air dance and MKM disco-mobile in the Glorieta starting at 01:00 in the morning.
