The Sagunto Town Hall has welcomed athlete Yago Gómez, national runner-up in traditional wushu, in an event with the mayor and the sports councillor.
The town hall's plenary hall hosted this Wednesday the tribute to young athlete Yago Gómez, who was proclaimed national runner-up in traditional wushu in Vinaroz last June. The event was attended by the mayor, Darío Moreno, and the councillor for Physical Activity, Health and Sports, Javier Timón.
In the National Championship, Yago Gómez achieved the silver medal in imitation styles (Mantis) and fourth place in the long weapon category (Pu Dao), competing under the Valencian Wushu Federation.
The season for the athlete from Puerto de Sagunto is not limited to that success. Earlier, in April, he won silver at the Regional Championship of the Valencian Community held in Castellón de la Plana. In his international debut, at the 17th Spring Dragon Wushu International Tournament in Catanzaro (Italy), he secured bronze in long weapon among over 500 athletes from 30 countries.
The mayor wanted to highlight minority sports: “Just because it is a minority sport doesn’t mean it cannot stand shoulder to shoulder with any football player or anyone who practices basketball, handball or any other sport.” He also emphasised Yago's “humility,” aware of the importance of his surroundings despite competing in an individual discipline.
Javier Timón underscored the young athlete's ability to overcome challenges: “It is important to be able to, when difficulties arise, instead of lamenting, tap into that instinct for overcoming and accept the reality of the moment.” The councillor also wished him a speedy recovery from the injury he has been carrying for months to face “the major challenge that will be the World Championship in Shanghai.”
Yago, who has been training since he was four at the Thieulam Martial Arts School in Puerto de Sagunto and this year joined the Club Esportiu Wushu Náquera, lamented “not being able to give my 100% this season due to several injuries and some minor complications,” but thanked his family, teammates, and club for their support.
This is not the first time the town hall has welcomed Yago Gómez: last July he was invited to the plenary hall after being proclaimed cadet champion of traditional wushu in bare hand. The athlete continues his rehabilitation with his sights set on the World Championship in Shanghai.
