The Xirivella Town Hall is calling on the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation for urgent action to clear the riverbed of the Túria in the municipality, due to the accumulation of dry vegetation and the risk of flooding and fires.
The Xirivella Town Hall has requested the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation (CHX) to take immediate action to clean and prepare the riverbed of the Túria as it passes through the municipality. The accumulation of weeds and vegetation, combined with rising temperatures and atmospheric instability, has led the council to demand that these works be carried out as quickly as possible.
The local government reminds that the conservation and maintenance of the riverbed are the responsibility of the CHX, and considers it essential that they act before autumn arrives. The mayor of Xirivella, Paqui Bartual, has warned that “we cannot afford to face the upcoming season with the riverbed in its current condition,” in a context where experts have been alerting for months about a particularly complex meteorological scenario.
The request comes after the Valencian Community has experienced episodes of extreme heat and the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is among the highest on record. This situation, combined with the influx of cold air aloft, could promote the formation of intense storms and torrential rains.
In addition to the risk of flooding, the council warns that the accumulated dry vegetation at various points in the riverbed poses an additional danger of possible fires. In this regard, the town hall recalls the fire declared in the Carraixet ravine as an example of the need to enhance prevention during the months of highest risk.
Bartual has emphasized that “the accumulated weeds become a real powder keg” during prolonged episodes of high temperatures, and has insisted that the CHX must act urgently. “Prevention is always the best tool,” said the mayor, who urges the agency to take responsibility as the competent authority in managing the Túria riverbed.
The Xirivella Town Hall is confident that the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation will carry out the necessary cleaning, clearing, and conditioning works without further delay to ensure the safety of residents. “I am talking about prevention, safety, and common sense. We still have time to reduce risks, but for that, it is essential that those who have direct responsibility fulfill their obligation,” concluded Paqui Bartual.
