Valencia City Council has prepared a special operation for cleaning and waste collection on the beaches and at the observation point in Malva-rosa for the solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12.
Valencia City Council has arranged an extraordinary cleaning and waste collection operation due to the solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12. Municipal services will reinforce attention at the beaches and the official observation point in Malva-rosa to keep these areas in the best condition in anticipation of a high influx of people.
The Department of Cleaning and Waste Collection has increased both the number of containers and bins as well as human and mechanical resources. The operation is scheduled from the afternoon of the 12th until the early hours, aiming to manage waste generation, expedite the emptying of bins, and recover the sandy areas and promenade after the event.
Reinforcement on the northern beaches
On the northern beaches, the City Council has planned the installation of ten 1,000-litre containers at various points along the promenade, as well as 50 pairs of 120-litre bins for packaging and other waste — a total of 100 units. Additionally, on the viewing promenade of the Marina, a reinforcement of ten pairs of bins has been scheduled, bringing the total to 20 pairs, and a team of two people with a van has been designated for manual sweeping and emptying these bins from 10:00 PM.
The service has organised eight workers from 6:00 PM until midnight, distributed between the promenade and the sand, four of whom are reinforcements. This deployment has been supplemented, between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM, by two work teams with two tankers, two sweepers, and four professionals.
The beach recovery has also been brought forward during the early hours. From 4:00 AM, 28 workers have been scheduled on the sand, 14 of whom are additional, until 7:00 AM; eight people on the promenade, four of whom are reinforcements, until 10:00 AM; and two open-top all-terrain trucks with two professionals each. Furthermore, two tractors with sand cleaners are expected to start their work at 6:00 AM.
More resources on the southern coastline
On the southern beaches of the city and the docks, where additional bins have already been installed in road sections and urban areas, the operation has reinforced deposit capacity with 22 pairs of bins on the Pinedo promenade, 18 on the El Saler promenade, four at the El Saler dock, and four at the L’Albufera dock. For August 11, it has been planned to add another six pairs at the El Palmar dock and two metal containers for other waste at both the El Saler and L’Albufera docks.
Three additional teams have also been arranged, each consisting of two people and a van, to cover the areas of highest expected concentration between 6:00 PM and 12:20 AM. Their task has been defined for emptying bins, manual sweeping, and removing any waste that may remain outside the containers.
On these beaches, the manual sand cleaning service, consisting of 14 workers, and the two all-terrain trucks for collecting bags have started their work earlier, from 4:00 AM instead of 5:00 AM. Mechanical cleaning has been scheduled with three sand-cleaning tractors starting at 5:00 AM.
A coordinated municipal operation
The cleaning reinforcement is part of the special municipal operation that Valencia City Council has prepared for the eclipse day, coordinated with security, mobility, healthcare, and civil protection in anticipation of the expected high turnout.
Residents and visitors attending the beaches to observe the eclipse should keep in mind that the event will take place at sunset on August 12. It is recommended to follow the instructions of the operation and use the bins and containers provided to keep the areas in good condition.
