The Sagunto Plenary unanimously approves the creation of Municipal Agriculture Day, which will be celebrated every 9 September with activities promoting the local agricultural sector.
The ordinary plenary session of August in the Sagunto City Council has unanimously approved an institutional declaration establishing Municipal Agriculture Day, a day that will be celebrated every 9 September, coinciding with World Agriculture Day. The aim, according to the approved text, is to "publicly acknowledge the contribution of the agricultural sector to the economic, social, and environmental development of the city."
The declaration entrusts the Department of Agriculture with the annual preparation of a programme of commemorative activities, as well as their organisation, coordination, and development, always within the budgetary availability of the department. The day will have a "commemorative, informative, and participatory" character, and the council may organise or collaborate in initiatives aimed at promoting the local agricultural sector.
Among the objectives pursued are to recognise the importance of the local agricultural sector, to foster social awareness towards agriculture in Sagunto, to highlight its role, to promote generational renewal, to encourage the consumption of local products, and to strengthen the rural identity of the municipality. The text emphasises that "agriculture has historically been one of the strategic sectors of the municipality, shaping its landscape, economy, culture, and social structure."
The declaration highlights the relevance of citrus cultivation, both in the context of the Valencian Community and in the Camp de Morvedre region, where the sector faces challenges such as market volatility, but also opportunities in varietal innovation, digitalisation, precision agriculture, certified sustainability, and enhancement of the origin brand. With this initiative, Sagunto connects its local reality with the global context of the agricultural sector, reinforcing the municipal commitment to a "competitive, sustainable, and socially cohesive agriculture."
The first edition of this day will be held on 9 September 2026, and it will be then that the specific programme of events will be known, which will be defined by the Department of Agriculture over the coming months.
