Coque Malla stars in 'The Threepenny Opera' at the Roman Theatre of Sagunt on August 8, as part of the Sagunt a Escena festival.

The Sagunt a Escena festival hosts the play by Brecht and Weill on Saturday, August 8, with Coque Malla as Mackie Knife at the Roman Theatre.

The Roman Theatre of Sagunt will host The Threepenny Opera, by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, on Saturday, August 8, in a version directed by Mario Vega with Coque Malla as the lead. The performance is part of the 43rd edition of the Sagunt a Escena festival, organised by the Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Universidades through the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), in collaboration with the Diputación de Valencia and the Sagunto City Council.

The play, premiered in Berlin in 1928, is an adaptation of The Beggar's Opera by John Gay, and reflects on the relationships between power, economy, and social inequality. In this new Spanish version, the action is set in interwar London, where an abandoned slaughterhouse becomes the symbolic stage of a corrupt and unequal society.

Coque Malla takes on the role of Mackie Knife leading a cast that includes the National Theatre Award Juan Gómez-Cornejo, responsible for the lighting design. The musical direction is by Miguel Malla.

On the same day, in the Off Romà section, the Valencian company Fil d’Arena presents Públic, a journey through the Pantalán of Puerto de Sagunto that seeks to reveal the hidden poetry of industrial archaeology in contrast to the maritime façade. The dancers establish a sensitive dialogue with the environment through the interaction of their bodies with the public space.

This contemporary dance proposal features a DJ who plays live music and creates a unique sound space in real-time. Two dancers will carry mobile speakers to amplify and shift this soundscape, creating an immersive experience that moves with and among the artistic formation.

Both performances are part of the festival's programming, which this year combines classic theatre and contemporary proposals. Tickets for The Threepenny Opera can be purchased through the usual channels of the IVC and the festival itself.
