Valencia City Council has awarded the supply of a climate chamber for the germination laboratory of the municipal nurseries at El Saler, essential for the reproduction of native plant species and the restoration of the Albufera Natural Park.
Valencia City Council has awarded the supply of a new climate chamber for the germination laboratory of the municipal nurseries at El Saler, a facility deemed essential for the conservation and production of native plant species intended for the environmental restoration of the Albufera Natural Park.
The councillor for Devesa-Albufera, José Gosálbez, explained that “protecting L’Albufera requires more than good intentions. It requires planning, knowledge, and resources. With this new climate chamber, we recover an essential tool for our technicians to continue reproducing native flora with all guarantees, reinforcing the recovery of the natural park.”
The chamber will allow for precise reproduction of parameters such as temperature, humidity, and lighting, creating controlled conditions that ensure stable and repeatable germination trials, regardless of weather variations. “This process is crucial for obtaining quality plants that will later be used in conservation and recovery efforts for the vegetation of Devesa and L’Albufera,” the councillor clarified.
Gosálbez emphasized that “every plant that is recovered in Devesa involves hours of scientific, technical, and laboratory work. Our duty is to ensure that those who care for this natural heritage have the best equipment to do so rigorously and effectively.” He also stressed that “protecting our natural heritage also means providing our technicians with the best means to carry out their work. Investing in municipal nurseries is investing in the future of L’Albufera, strengthening an infrastructure that has contributed to preserving one of Spain's most valuable natural spaces for decades.”
The municipal nurseries at El Saler have been a benchmark in the production of native flora for decades. Their origins date back to 1958 as a forestry nursery, and since 1981, they have been dedicated to producing plants aimed at the recovery of degraded natural spaces within the park. Currently, they work with around 170 plant species, which requires highly specialized conservation and testing conditions.
With this new infrastructure, the council reinforces its commitment to conserving the city's natural environment, a space that attracts thousands of visitors each year and is key to the ecological balance of the area. The climate chamber adds to other equipment in the germination laboratory, aiming to improve the effectiveness of restoration work being carried out in Devesa and at the lake.
