ARCAM's underwater prospecting work has located a vast seagrass meadow in excellent condition one kilometre from Brosquil beach, at depths of 6 to 9 metres.
The underwater prospecting efforts driven by the Association for the Recovery and Conservation of Archaeology in the Sea (ARCAM), under an agreement with the Cullera City Council, have enabled the identification of a vast seagrass meadow in excellent conservation status off the municipality's coastline.
During an inspection day, diving teams conducted four dives in an area located approximately one kilometre from the coast of Brosquil beach, at depths between 6 and 9 metres. There, they confirmed the presence of numerous points with seagrass, all of which were georeferenced to facilitate monitoring.
Observations also suggest that the detected beds show continuity, indicating a meadow of dimensions much larger than initially confirmed. This discovery is excellent news for Cullera's natural heritage and confirms the high environmental quality of its waters.
Seagrass only thrives in waters with very favourable environmental conditions, making its presence one of the best indicators of ecological health in the marine environment. This plant, considered one of the most important ecosystems throughout the Mediterranean, produces large amounts of oxygen, absorbs carbon dioxide, and serves as a refuge, breeding ground, and feeding area for hundreds of fish species and other organisms.
The Cullera City Council and ARCAM will continue to work in this direction to enhance scientific knowledge and conservation of the municipality's seabed. Those interested in learning more about the status of the meadow can consult the upcoming reports published by the council.
