Catarroja to Recover the Memory of Blasquista Republicanism with a Grant from the Provincial Council

The City Council of Catarroja has secured funding from the Valencia Provincial Council to research and disseminate the history of local Blasquista republicanism, a project that begins with the restoration of a flag from 1933.

The City Council of Catarroja has obtained a grant from the Valencia Provincial Council under the Democratic Memory aid programme. The funds will be used to finance an ongoing research project aimed at recovering, documenting, and disseminating a key period in the contemporary history of the municipality.

The research is led by historian and archaeologist Tono Vizcaíno and takes as its starting point the Blasquista republican flag from 1933, recently restored by the council after being temporarily lent by the family that had preserved it for decades. However, the project goes much further than this piece: it aims to reconstruct the history of the House of Democracy, recover oral testimonies, locate unpublished documentation, and study the role of Blasquista republicanism in the social, cultural, and political life of Catarroja during the first third of the 20th century.

The work will combine archival research with interviews of witnesses and families, as well as the study of photographs, correspondence, and other heritage elements. The goal is to create a new documentary archive on this period of local history. The final result will be a publication that integrates historical research with the testimonies collected during the fieldwork.

The Councillor for Democratic Regeneration, Martí Raga, has described the grant as "a recognition of a rigorous project that will allow us to recover a part of Catarroja's history that had been scattered among documents, photographs, and the memories of many families in the town."

Raga emphasized that "the Blasquista republican flag is an extraordinary heritage piece, but its true value lies in the history it represents. With this research, we want to preserve that legacy and make it accessible to all citizens with historical rigor and a commitment to conserving our heritage."

The initiative is part of the City Council of Catarroja's commitment to recovering, conserving, and disseminating local historical heritage and democratic memory. The grant will enable initiatives that bring residents closer to a part of their past and help preserve it for future generations.

The project, which is already underway, does not yet have an announced completion date, but the resulting publication will be accessible to all those interested in the history of the municipality.
