The ordinary Plenary of August at the Sagunto City Council unanimously approved an institutional declaration of support and solidarity with the Venezuelan people, affected by the earthquakes that occurred on June 24 in the north of the country. The document, supported by all municipal groups, reaffirms the value of decentralized cooperation and municipalism as instruments of solidarity between peoples and cities.
The declaration expresses the Council's support for the injured, those who have lost their homes or livelihoods, and all those affected by the disaster. It also extends this solidarity to the Venezuelan community residing in Sagunto and the rest of Spain, who are experiencing this situation with particular pain and uncertainty for their relatives and places of origin.
The text also acknowledges the work of emergency teams, civil protection, healthcare personnel, humanitarian organizations, volunteers, and social entities that assist the victims and channel aid. The Plenary emphasizes the historical, cultural, and human ties between Spain and Venezuela, and recalls that a significant Venezuelan community resides in many Spanish municipalities.
On June 29, the Sagunto City Council already held a minute of silence at noon in memory of the victims, in an act agreed upon by the Board of Spokespersons of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces and supported by city councils, provincial councils, and councils throughout Spain.
The earthquakes of June 24 have caused a humanitarian emergency of enormous severity. According to the latest reports, there are around 3,811 fatalities and 16,740 injuries, in addition to an undetermined number of missing persons. Preliminary estimates place the number of affected buildings at nearly 59,000, with severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and basic services.
With this declaration, Sagunto joins the network of municipalities that promote collaboration between local administrations to contribute to the recovery of Venezuela. The Municipal Corporation reaffirms its commitment to international solidarity and to the Venezuelan-origin residents in the locality.
