The Sagunt a Escena festival presents 'Terra de guapes', a show by Sandra Monfort that explores Valencian folklore. The performance will be on August 15 at the Roman Theatre.
The Sagunt a Escena festival has unveiled Terra de guapes, the new show by Sandra Monfort, which pays homage to Valencian musical tradition. The event will take place on August 15 at 22:30 at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto.
The proposal, organised by the Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Universidades through the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), with the collaboration of the Diputación de Valencia and the Ayuntamiento de Sagunto, offers a free and contemporary approach to Valencian folklore. The show is structured in four acts that symbolically trace a journey through popular songs.
The production incorporates references to malaguenyes, cants de batre, La dansa de La Moma, Muixeranga d'Algemesí, Ball del Vetlatori, and Misteri d'Elx. Music, performance, and live dance are integrated on stage to explore the cultural manifestations of Valencian tradition.
Monfort, a singer, instrumentalist, and multidisciplinary creator, has relied on the archives of the Fonoteca de Materiales de la Generalitat to recover recordings and traditional repertoires that engage with contemporary languages. Following the effects of the dana, the artist from Pedreguer wanted to demonstrate her love for her roots with this work.
Additionally, the programming of the Off Romà section includes on the same day, August 15 at 20:00, the performance of Rob, the latest creation by Teatre de l'Abast, at the Civic Centre of Puerto de Sagunto. The company, founded in 2016 by Lucía Aibar, Victoria Mínguez, and Ramón Rodenas, develops a unique language based on the research of physical theatre.
In Rob, gesture and puppet manipulation come together to narrate the story of a castaway who finds in imagination his own lifeboat. The artistic team includes José Puchades (Putxa) from Zero en Conducta, who choreographs alongside Julieta Gascón.
The work received the Menkes Award for Best Dance-Theatre Show in 2025, and its lead, Ramon Rodenas, won the award for Best Male Performance from the Associació d'Actors i Actrius del País Valencià (AAPV) in 2020, as well as being a nominee for Best Actor at the XXIII edition of the Max Awards.
This is a proposal for all audiences with free access, included in the Off programming of the festival, entirely made up of Valencian companies.
