The Entrada de Bandas in Ontinyent will feature a new award this year recognising the best performance of a pasodoble by composer José María Ferrero Pastor, as part of the centenary of his birth.
This year's Entrada de Bandas during the Moros y Cristianos festivities in Ontinyent will include a new award that will honour the best performance of a pasodoble by Mestre José María Ferrero Pastor. The distinction will be presented during the event on Thursday 20 August, a date that will be marked by the figure and works of the Ontinyent composer.
The award is established in celebration of the centenary of the musician's birth, which Ontinyent will commemorate throughout 2026 with a wide range of activities. The initiative aims to highlight Ferrero Pastor's contribution to festive music and to bring his legacy closer to different generations.
The councillor for Fair, Festivities and Traditions, Àngels Muñoz, and the councillor for Culture and member of the Centenary Commission, Àlex Borrell, have emphasised that “the new award aims to value festive music while also recognising the performance of Mestre Ferrero's compositions, in an event that will be particularly emotional this year.”
Specifically, the direction of the traditional joint performance of the Moorish march “Chimo”, the composer's most emblematic work, will be led by his daughter, Pilar Ferrero Silvage. The tribute will once again bring together the participating bands around a piece closely linked to the festive identity of Ontinyent.
The new recognition adds to other initiatives promoted by the Ontinyent City Council to celebrate the centenary, such as the recent concert that brought together the four bands of the city for a joint tribute or the publication of an illustrated children's story to introduce his figure to the youngest audiences.
Looking ahead to the end of the year, a permanent exhibition space dedicated to the maestro is planned at the Casa de Cultura, as well as a special edition of the magazine Almaig and a performance by the Caixa Ontinyent Symphony Orchestra of a symphonic poem by Mestre Ferrero at the Teatre Echegaray, with an arrangement for symphony orchestra made by his son Daniel Ferrero.
