The San Clemente Musical Group from Cuenca has been declared the winner of the XVI Film Music Band Contest ‘Memorial Rafael Talens Pelló’ in Cullera with 433.5 points.
The San Clemente Musical Group from Cuenca took the first prize at the XVI Film Music Band Contest ‘Memorial Rafael Talens Pelló’, held last Saturday in Cullera. The jury awarded them 433.5 points, the highest score among the three finalist groups.
Under the direction of Julián Redondo López, the Cuenca band performed the pasodobles ‘Per Navarras’ by Fernando Bonete Piqueras and ‘Rafael Maurici’ by Rafael Talens, before tackling the soundtrack ‘The Jesus Christ Superstars Collection’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Additionally, the group also won the award for the best pasodoble, worth 1,000 euros.
The second place went to the Association Band of Music of Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), with 385 points and a prize of 5,000 euros. Directed by Luis Sánchez Romanos, they performed the pasodobles ‘A mi Buñol’ and ‘Gloria Ramírez’, and closed with a selection from the soundtrack of ‘Batman’ by Danny Elfman.
The third position was awarded to the Patronato Escuela Banda Juvenil de Música de Firgas (Gran Canaria), which obtained 339 points and 4,000 euros. With Francisco José Navarro Marrero conducting, they played the pasodobles ‘El abanico’ and ‘Fina Blasco’, and concluded with the cinematic proposal ‘Indiana Jones Selection/Star Wars’ by John Williams.
The first prize is worth 6,000 euros, in addition to the 4,000 euros subsidy for participating that each of the three finalist bands received. The contest, now in its sixteenth edition, brought together groups from various parts of Spain in Cullera.
As a finale and out of competition while the jury deliberated, the Banda Jove of the Societat Ateneu Musical de Cullera, directed by Dunia Pérez Alcaraz, performed the pasodoble ‘Dunia Piris’ by Rafael Talens and the soundtrack ‘Disney Film Favorites How to Train Your Dragon’ by John Powell.
This year, weather conditions forced the cancellation of the traditional parade of bands and the contest was moved from the Jardines del Mercat to the Municipal Auditorium. Despite the rain, the event proceeded normally, and Cullera once again established itself as one of the main references for band music and cinematic repertoire.
