The Casa de la Cultura 'Salvador Cardona Miralles' in Oliva will open its doors on September 12, following a project that began in 2009 and has resumed with an investment of over 1.1 million euros.
The residents of Oliva will finally be able to enjoy their new Casa de la Cultura. The facility, which revives the Palacio de los Orduña and the former Centro Olivense, will open its doors on Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 PM, as announced by the Oliva City Council.
The opening culminates a process that has lasted nearly twenty years. The project was approved in 2009 by the Culture Department of the Generalitat Valenciana, but the works were halted three years later. In 2023, Mayor Yolanda Pastor signed the contract for the finishing works of the building, with a budget of 1,162,741 euros.
Of that amount, 633,437 euros have been financed by the Generalitat Valenciana and 529,304 euros by the Oliva City Council. Additionally, the council has recently tendered the centre's furniture for 112,512 euros and in July approved a credit modification of 70,000 euros for technical equipment.
The mayor has highlighted that completing the works has been one of the priorities of her term, aiming to "preserve our historical heritage and provide citizens with a first-rate cultural centre." Pastor has thanked the involvement of the administrations, municipal technicians, and the project's architect.
The building combines the stately Baroque construction of the late 18th century of the Palacio de los Orduña with the annex known as Centro Olivense, built in the 1950s. The project, designed by architect Salvador Lara Ortega, dean of the College of Architects of the Valencian Community, aims to preserve the original architectural essence with a modern and functional perspective.
The Culture Councillor, Teresa Tur, expressed satisfaction with the imminent opening and emphasised that Oliva "demanded" a cultural epicentre that values culture as a priority. The facility will feature an exhibition hall, two conference rooms, the offices of the Culture department, and a bar.
The inauguration event will include musical performances, institutional speeches, and the opening of a retrospective exhibition of the artwork of Miquel Vicens, on the occasion of his appointment as Favourite Son. The City Council has invited all residents to participate in this event.
