The Central Fallera Board has selected Enrique Hernandis and Frank J. Cogollos to compose the pasodobles for the major falleras of Valencia in 2027, in a pioneering competition with 12 candidates.
The Central Fallera Board (JCF) now has names for the music that will be played in 2027. Enrique Hernandis Martínez and Frank J. Cogollos have been chosen to compose the pasodobles for the major fallera and the major infant fallera of Valencia for that year, according to the results of the first public competition organised by the entity.
Hernandis Martínez, the winner of the call, will sign the piece dedicated to the major fallera, while Cogollos will do the same for the major infant fallera. Both works will be premiered with the collaboration of the Municipal Symphonic Band of Valencia.
The competition, which started with 12 candidates, awards a grant of 1,000 euros per pasodoble. This initiative is part of the Valencia Music City strategy and responds to one of the conclusions of the I Symposium on Music and Fallas, held in March at the Prince Felipe Science Museum.
The councillor for Fallas and president of the JCF, Santiago Ballester, has defended the initiative: “it represents a further step in recognising music as one of the fundamental pillars of the Fallas.” In his opinion, “the Fallas cannot be understood without music,” and this competition aims to “recognise the talent of our composers and generate new opportunities for musical creation linked to the festival.”
The selection was based on the evaluation of the artistic and professional merits of the candidates, without requiring unpublished works. The evaluation committee was chaired by Nicolás Garcés, general coordinator of Fallas at the JCF, and included Juan Pablo Valero, general director of Valencia Music City; Miguel Vidagany, deputy director of the Municipal Symphonic Band; composer Ferrer Ferran, and Carmen Martínez Ferrer, manager of the JCF.
Among the criteria evaluated, the artistic trajectory, the quality of previous works, and the connection with festive and traditional Valencian music were significant. The pasodobles will be premiered at the official events of 2027, when the major falleras take office.
