Hamlet with actors with Down syndrome arrives at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto

Teatro La Plaza presents this Tuesday at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto 'Hamlet, a reimagined version', featuring seven actors with Down syndrome. The performance is part of the Sagunt a Escena festival.

The Sagunt a Escena festival brings to the Roman Theatre of Sagunto this Tuesday, August 11, the play Hamlet, a reimagined version, by Teatro La Plaza. The production, directed by Chela de Ferrari, brings together seven actors with Down syndrome and one actress with an intellectual disability.

The proposal starts from Shakespeare's famous monologue “to be or not to be” to reflect on the lives of people with Down syndrome in today's society. The original text interacts with the actors' own experiences to question the paradigms of efficiency, production, and beauty.

The performance reaches the Roman venue thanks to the collaboration of the theatre department of the Valencia Provincial Council. The event is organized by the Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Universidades through the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), in collaboration with the Sagunto City Council.

Since its premiere in 2019, Hamlet has toured theatres around the world and has received accolades such as the audience award at the Mostra Internacional de Teatro de Ribadavia in 2022. Teatro La Plaza, for its part, opened its doors in 2002 as a creative space to investigate reality and build a critical viewpoint in dialogue with the community.

Inclusive mediation workshop

The IVC complements the programming with cultural mediation initiatives to make the theatrical offering more inclusive. In this context, the festival has organized the workshop “A place to dance”, taught on August 1, 5, and 10 by choreographers Ana Lola Cosín Torada and Lucas García.

The workshop has involved 14 members of InsProject, a Sagunto association that works with people with disabilities. The sessions have been held at the Municipal Cultural Centre of Puerto de Sagunto and have allowed participants to practice movement with accessible techniques and tools.

The activity will conclude this Tuesday with the group's attendance at the performance of Hamlet at the Roman Theatre, where they will be able to see on stage the artists with whom they have shared the workshop.
