The Valencia City Council has activated a pilot plan for smart urban irrigation on Almassora Street, covering 1,680 m² of green areas. The initiative aims to optimise water consumption and improve tree health.
The Valencia City Council has launched a pilot project for smart urban irrigation on Almassora Street, over an area of 1,680 square metres. The initiative, framed within the city’s Urban Sandbox, seeks to optimise water use and enhance tree health through Internet of Things (IoT)-based technology.
The system, developed by Grupo Simetría in collaboration with the technology company Fliwer, integrates the Fliwer One platform, which automatically manages sprinkler and drip irrigation. Thanks to real-time data collection, it adjusts the water needs of the green areas, reducing consumption and promoting tree growth.
The Councillor for Innovation, Paula Llobet, stated that this project "represents an example of how technological innovation can help us advance in more efficient management of water resources." She also emphasised that the Urban Sandbox "reduces barriers to innovation" and facilitates testing solutions in a real environment before larger-scale implementation.
The pilot originates from the agreement between València Innovation Capital (VIC) and The Mother Trees (VLC City Lab), in response to the challenge 'València, a resilient city against extreme climate phenomena'. The main phase will have an initial duration of three months, extendable up to twelve to evaluate its performance under different climatic conditions.
During the development, indicators such as water consumption reduction and tree health improvement will be analysed. If the results are positive, the solution could be scaled to other green areas in the city, representing a step forward in the sustainable management of public spaces.
Local residents will notice a more efficient irrigation management, with a more rational use of water and better maintenance of the trees. The City Council expects the pilot to generate useful knowledge for future actions throughout the city.
